Convenience Shops

Objectives

To support township and rural community convenience shops, including spazas. The funding will be utilised for the refurbishment of businesses and facilitating wholesale aggregation. Such businesses will be provided with financial and non-financial support in terms of technical skills, support for regulatory compliance and capacity building.

Participation

Increase the involvement and active participation of South African-owned spaza shops in the retail trade sector, particularly within townships and remote rural areas.

Affordability

Provide affordable and safe for consumption products and services to residents in townships and rural communities through locally owned spaza shops.

Support

Support locally-owned spaza shops by building capacity, improving operational efficiency, and enabling access to competitive pricing through strategic partnerships.

Sustainability

Help spaza shops take advantage of bulk purchasing benefits and receive business support to boost their long-term business growth, sustainability and competitiveness.

Financial Assistance

Get up to R80 000 in funding (up to R300 000 for registered businesses) with R40 000 as a grant, and funding above R40 000 to be a blend of grant and debt.

Business Growth & Development

Receive business management training in stock management, digital literacy, and financial skills to help your shop grow and stay competitive.

Operational Support & Upgrades

Upgrade your shop with better shelving, refrigeration, and security while integrating digital payment and inventory systems for smoother operations.

Empowering Township & Rural Spaza Shops

The Spaza Shop Support Fund, supported by the Department of Small Business Development (dsbd) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) aims to help township and rural community convenience stores (spaza shops) through financial and non-financial support.

South African-owned businesses supported

Local Procurement

Funding should go towards purchasing of goods and services from accredited local suppliers whose goods and services are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements, especially for setup and operational costs.

Non-eligible expenses

Funding may not be used for non-business-related expenses or personal costs unrelated to business development. Funding may not be used for the sale of alcoholic beverages.
